Renaissance Faire Fashion - Do’s and Don’ts

It’s whimsical, it’s wacky, it’s the perfect excuse to get dressed up and eat a turkey leg with your friends. The renaissance faire is the place for creative expression and artistic minds to run wild and frolic freely. While what you wear is only a portion of the fun, you may want to take a few things into consideration when planning your looks.

Don’t

Don’t plan or wear a costume or garb that is uncomfortable. Renaissance Faire events are typically outdoors and the festival grounds can be quite large. You’ll want to wear clothes and shoes that are magical, but practical. Plus, you’ll want to be able to comfortably have fun and enjoy yourself while there so make sure you can move and groove freely in whatever you choose to wear.

Do

Dress for the weather and layer appropriately. It may be quite warm, chilly, or a mix of both. Plan to wear clothing that allows you to layer and accommodate temperatures appropriately and comfortably.

Don’t

Don’t forget to consider bathroom accessibility. It’s likely that the only bathroom options may be port o potties. Wear something with bathroom accessibility because we all know those things are anything but magical.

Do

Wear something you feel your best in. The reason everyone loves the renaissance faire is the fact that it’s an occasion and celebration where people come to share an imaginative, fun spirit. All ages come together to play, and have fun, and eat. At the end of the day, the most important part of this is that you feel your best. No matter what era, theme, or aesthetic you choose, the renaissance faire is a place where you can unleash your creative spirit and express yourself.

Don’t

Touch people or their costumes without their permission. Respect that although a large portion of attendees will be dressed up, not all are entertainers and not everyone will want to interact with you. Most people will welcome a friendly hello or photo, but it’s always important to respect personal boundaries and ask permission when doing so.

Do

Research the themes and activities happening at your renaissance faire/festival. If you’re looking for inspiration of what to wear, this can be a great place to start. I love any reason to dress up in a themed or curated look and fantasy rules here at the renaissance faire. It’s so much fun to experience a different version of ourselves in this way and everyone there has one common goal to…eat, drink, and be merry amongst themselves in the name of fantasy.

The Renaissance Faire is the perfect place to let go, have fun, watch some jousting, and eat a wide variety of middle aged munchies. Go with an open mind and open plan of enjoying yourselves. Play isn’t just for children. Talk to the mermaid. Blow bubbles. Twirl in your dress and lean into the fantasy of it all.
